Photography


Beginning

Prerequisite: May be taken by juniors and seniors only during Fall, sophomores and juniors only in the Spring. This course provides a solid foundation of basic photographic knowledge from camera and meter types and their operation through black and white film processing and printing and the use of darkroom equipment. Composition (how to take better pictures) is stressed throughout the class. From this class, students will be able to determine if they should continue to advanced classes. Strongly recommend completion with “C” or better to continue to Advanced Photography.



Advanced

Prerequisite: Beginning Photography and teacher permission Building on the basic knowledge gained in the beginning class, students work on projects involving the following areas: fiber printing and toning,
flash and studio photography, digital imaging, pinhole cameras, and more. Students with interest and aptitude in this program may choose to continue in photography during their senior year in Photographic Technology program. Strongly recommend completion of the previous trimester with a “C” or better to continue.



Commercial

Prerequisite: Beginning/Advanced Photography; teacher permission. Students who have had Beginning/Advanced Photography and want to continue in a one-period, year long course in conjunction with Photographic Technology this class is for you. Investigate various aspects of commercial photography, including studio lighting, 4” x 5” view camera operation and digital imaging. Students work on projects that can be placed in a professional portfolio and develop a resume that could be used to apply for entry-level positions in the photographic industry. Strongly recommend completion of previous trimester with a “C” or better to continue to the next trimester. This course may be repeated each Trimester.



Photography Technology

Prerequisite: Beginning/Advanced Photography; teacher permission. Successful completion of this course will provide students with the skills necessary to enter the photographic job market. Project work includes studio photography using medium format and view cameras, digital imaging, pinhole cameras, portfolio printing and much more. Students will design and complete a year-long photographic project. An exhibition of student work is held in the Spring. A resume, business card, and portfolio are also produced during Spring trimester. Adobe Photoshop is used as a digital imaging program throughout the year. Cameras are provided for students who need them. Students must provide a negative binder and print box. Many opportunities exist to photograph school and community events for student portfolios. Strongly recommend completion of the previous trimester with a “C” or better to continue onto the next trimester.
